Canadian Fertilizers Limited in the Community
Contact Information
Since 1976, the community of Medicine Hat has been “home” for Canadian Fertilizers Limited, and from the start, the company has played an important role in helping the community grow and develop. In fact, as former Mayor Ted Grimm has commented, “Whenever we wanted to launch a project to help improve the community, we’d go to CFL and get their support – and a donation. That would set the tone for the business community to join in.”

What sort of projects and institutions does CFL support? There’s the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre in downtown Medicine Hat, built in 2005 as one of Alberta’s Centennial Legacy Projects. CFL was the first company to make a contribution to support development of this museum, gallery, historical archive, and performing arts center. In recognition of the company’s $250,000 pledge, the Centre’s Gallery Foyer, an area often used for exhibit openings and receptions, was named in honor of Canadian Fertilizers Limited.

CFL has also had a long-standing relationship with Medicine Hat College, a growing school that has served students in Southeast Alberta and beyond since 1965. With approximately 5,000 students – about half of them full-time – the college plays a critical role in enhancing the community’s economic development and the careers of its residents.

CFL sponsors a scholarship at the school, has made a donation to help expand its Power Engineering Laboratory, and provided volunteer help for various programs there.

The company also participates in the Southeastern Alberta Partners for Youth Career Development (SAYD). About 60 Medicine Hat-area companies are involved in SAYD, which offers training and career development programs leading to journeyman and technical certification. CFL trains four apprentices in SAYD programs each year and also provides leadership and organization for the SAYD program.

Another important area of the company’s community involvement is the Medicine Hat Fire Department and other public safety organizations. Employees at the CFL complex regularly work with police, fire and medical organizations on joint emergency response exercises. In fact, in 2006, the complex hosted a major simulation drill, involving not only Medicine Hat public safety officials, but also the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Military. CFL is committed to the highest safety standards, but preparedness exercises such as these provide important training to company and public safety personnel.

Other community activities CFL participates in and supports include:
  • United Way Chili Cook-Off
  • Canadian Blood Services Partners for Life
  • Cancer Society
  • Sponsorship of local youth and community activities.
