When was the Medicine Hat complex built?
|
| |
Plant construction began in 1974 and was completed in 1976.
Since then, Canadian Fertilizers Limited (CFL) has continued to invest
to keep the complex modern and competitive.
Over the years CFL has completed numerous debottlenecks and
upgrades to increase plant capacity and efficiency as well as
major environmental and technological improvements. CFL and
its owners continue to explore new initiatives to be
a leader in efficient, safe, and environmentally sound
fertilizer production.
For example, during 2007 CFL completed a complex-wide
turnaround at Medicine Hat to upgrade the electrical system
and make other improvements.

|
Who owns Canadian Fertilizers Limited?
|
| |
CFL is a cooperative, and its major owners are CF Industries
and Viterra Inc. CF Industries, based in Deerfield, Illinois, is
the premier North
American manufacturer and distributor of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer.
It owns 66 percent of CFL’s non-voting preferred stock.
Viterra is a global agribusiness
that provides premium quality ingredients to leading food manufacturers, and operates in
five interrelated business areas: grain handling and marketing, agri-products, food
processing, feed products, and financial services. It owns the
remaining 34 percent of CFL's preferred stock, and also operates four large
storage and distribution facilities in Brandon, Manitoba; Elstow,
Saskatchewan; Rycroft, Alberta; and Calgary, Alberta.

|
Who leads Canadian Fertilizers Limited?
|
| |
Dale Moverly
is the general manager.
|
|
Why was Medicine Hat chosen for the plant location?
|
| |
The city is ideally located to serve the vast Western Canadian agricultural
region, as well as northern-tier U.S. states. Good highways and rail
connections provide access to those markets. The Medicine Hat community,
known as “The Gas City,” has an abundant supply of natural gas, the
primary raw material needed to produce nitrogen fertilizer. Just as
importantly, the city’s progressive leadership and the availability of
talented, committed employees made it an ideal location in which to build a business.
|
|
Is the complex open for tours?
|
| |
Because of safety and insurance requirements, there are no
regularly scheduled public tours, but the complex does on
limited occasions host business, educational, and community
groups for visits. On special occasions, such as its 2006 30th
Anniversary Celebration, it hosted a Community Open House. To
discuss a possible visit, please contact the Human Resources
department at the Medicine Hat Complex at

Since the complex opened, CFL has worked hard to maintain the
highest environmental and safety standards. CFL's
excellence in safety was recognized in 2007 when it was named a top three finalist
for the 2007 Worksafe Alberta Health and Safety Leader Award of
Distinction. In January of 2008, CFL was again nominated for
this prestigious award. CFL has been a Partner in Health and
Safety since 1997 when the company achieved its first
Certificate of Recognition from the Alberta Government. This
initiative has lead to many improvements to safety programs
through the Partnership process.
In 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 CFL was also recognized by Alberta’s EnviroVista
program as an EnviroVista Leader. The program is a voluntary, facility-based
effort to recognize and promote environmental leadership and stewardship by the
province’s most progressive regulated operators.
CFL also has a comprehensive Site Emergency Response Plan. CFL
works closely with the City of Medicine Hat Emergency
Management as well as
with provincial and national emergency response organizations,
to conduct emergency preparedness response exercises. |
|
How will residents know if there is an emergency, and how should they deal with
one if it happens?
|
| |
CFL maintains close communications with local public safety and emergency response
personnel, alerting them immediately in the event of a potential problem situation.
Please review the CAER section (Community Awareness
and Emergency Response) section of this Web site for detailed information on
what to do and how to protect yourself and your family in the event of an emergency.
