The Medicine Hat Nitrogen Complex produces two nitrogen fertilizers: anhydrous ammonia and granular urea.

Anhydrous ammonia, at 82 percent nitrogen content, is the most concentrated nitrogen fertilizer. It is produced by chemically attaching nitrogen from the air to hydrogen produced from natural gas and water. The gaseous product is liquefied for storage by cooling to -33 degrees Celsius. See anhydrous ammonia production for more detail on the process.

Granular urea, the most concentrated solid nitrogen fertilizer, has a 46 percent nitrogen content. To manufacture it, ammonia and carbon dioxide (a byproduct in ammonia production) are combined under specific temperature and pressure conditions. Urea, a durable, dust-free fertilizer, is easy to handle, store, apply, and blend with other fertilizers. See granular urea production for more detail on the process.
