The Medicine Hat Nitrogen Complex provides vital nutrients for farmers throughout Western Canada and the northern-tier U.S. states. The complex produces anhydrous ammonia and granular urea, two of the most-used nitrogen fertilizer products. Fertilizers help increase both the yield and quality of crops.

Nitrogen fertilizer promotes protein formation and is a major component of chlorophyll; it is essential to healthy plant growth and high crop yields, especially for wheat, corn, and cotton.

Nature supplies limited amounts of nitrogen to the soil during thunderstorms, and some plants can utilize atmospheric nitrogen fixed by microscopic organisms. However, natural sources cannot sustain the high yields required for modern intensive agriculture. In fact, if nitrogen fertilizers were not used, crop yields would be reduced by as much as 75%.
